Urban Echoes: Exploring Colonial Legacies in Today’s Cities

Urban Echoes is a seminar dedicated to exploring the lasting influence of European colonialism on cities and urban spaces around the world.

Focusing on the period from the 15th to the mid-20th century, the seminar examines how colonial systems shaped the development, architecture, social structures, and identities of cities across different continents. Many of these influences remain visible today, while others continue to affect urban life in less obvious ways.

A central objective of Urban Echoes is to bring forward voices, experiences, and perspectives that have often been overlooked in traditional narratives about colonial history. Through discussion, reflection, and exchange, participants are encouraged to examine urban spaces from different perspectives and better understand how colonial legacies continue to influence contemporary societies.

The seminar also looks beyond the past. Participants explore creative and inclusive approaches to building a decolonial future, considering how cities can become spaces where diverse histories are acknowledged and different communities have the opportunity to be represented and heard.

Through intercultural dialogue and collaborative learning, Urban Echoes creates a space for young people to question established narratives, exchange experiences, and develop new perspectives on the relationship between history, identity, and the cities we live in today.
